Wat
Wisounalat, next to a modern Rama Hotel is also called
'Wat That Makmo' (Watermelon Stupa). One of the oldest temple in
LuangPrabang (UNESCO World Heritage city). 'That Makmo' was built
by Queen Wisounalat in 1504. It has a smaller stupa at each
corner, representing the four elements. It is located at the east
end of the temple compound. Wat Wisounalat was constructed in
1513 but destroyed by marauding Chinese tribes then it was
rebuilt in 1898, although it is still very medieval looking. The
'Sim' is virtually a museum of religious art, with the numerous
Buddha statues it exhibits: most are more than 400 years old. It
also contains the largest Buddha in the city of LuangPrabang and
old stelae engraved with Pali scriptures.
