Mr. Slowly...

Lao Perception

  • Smile! while dealing with each other. Lao people are required to be considerate, respectful and cheerful among them, but with other nationalities, the Lao people have their own way of dealing with people who overstep their social proprieties. No matter how hurry you are or how bad you really need something quickly, you will be shut out or will be left empty handed, suddenly everything is out of stock or the office is temporary closed. This is a standard Lao response to bluntness or condescension.
  • Complaints. Lao people rarely complain directly. In general, complaints are avoided not only because they create disharmony but also because it is felt that nothing can be done to alter the way things are. To the Lao people, complaining is just a waste of time and valuable energy. This concept leads to the most important principle of the Lao concept, that is "BOR PEN NGUNG" which means "It does not matter, forget it, Oh! well, it can't be help or it is going to be all right, there is no use, let by gone be by gone.."
But you shouldn't jump to any conclusion and show you anger or over displays of emotion. Openly disagreeing with them or offering direct opinions are discouraged as they can be constructed as disrespectful.

To the foreigner, Bor Pen Ngung may seem inadequate at times, but as a social lubricant it certainly has its uses. If you don't accept the way things are and allow yourself instead to become over excited; fraught or openly rude; you will be in danger of losing face and suddenly you're no longer welcome..
